The National Audit Office (NAO)\u00a0has been established by the Constitution of\u00a0the Republic of Mauritius.\u00a0NAO is an independent public body and has at its\u00a0head,\u00a0the\u00a0Director of Audit\u00a0whose appointment, independence, security of tenure and\u00a0authority,\u00a0are spelt out in the Constitution.<\/h5>
His duties and powers are laid down in the Finance and Audit Act and several other legislations. In the international forum, NAO is\u00a0referred to as the Supreme\u00a0Audit Institution (SAI) of Mauritius.<\/h5>
NAO forms an\u00a0integral part of the governance system of Mauritius,\u00a0playing\u00a0an essential role in\u00a0the accountability\u00a0cycle.\u00a0The Legislature (National Assembly) is the only authority to\u00a0appropriate public funds to public\u00a0sector entities\u00a0which\u00a0are therefore accountable to the\u00a0National Assembly for the use of financial resources provided to\u00a0them.<\/h5>
It is the responsibility of the NAO to give independent assurance to the National Assembly that these entities are operating and accounting for their performance in accordance with the purpose intended by the National Assembly. NAO contributes to the improvement in the management of public funds, promoting accountability and transparency.<\/h5>
Statutory responsibilities and powers have been conferred upon\u00a0the Director of Audit to fulfill\u00a0his obligations.\u00a0NAO\u00a0has the statutory authority to examine and report on\u00a0the Annual\u00a0Statements of the Republic of Mauritius,\u00a0the underlying records\u00a0of all Ministries\u00a0and\u00a0Government Departments,\u00a0as well as\u00a0the accounts of\u00a0a large number of\u00a0other\u00a0public sector\u00a0bodies.<\/h5>
NAO is\u00a0a member of\u00a0international and regional blocks\u00a0including the International Organisation\u00a0of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI) which\u00a0operates\u00a0as an umbrella organisation for\u00a0the\u00a0external government audit community. We adhere to the\u00a0International Standards of Supreme\u00a0Audit Institutions\u00a0(ISSAIs)\u00a0which\u00a0are\u00a0professional standards and best practice guidelines for\u00a0public sector auditors, authorised and endorsed by INTOSAI.<\/h5>
NAO operates within regulations pertaining to the Public Sector and has qualified, experienced\u00a0and committed staff\u00a0who\u00a0assist\u00a0the\u00a0Director of Audit\u00a0in the\u00a0discharge\u00a0of\u00a0his legal obligations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/h5>
